Paving Breaker - VK 117LS (91 lb)

The VK 117LS combines the latch type retainer of the VK 117L with a silencer, and is technically equivalent to the Chicago Pneumatic CP 1170S. At 91 lb it delivers 1,200 blows per minute on 35 l/s of air through a 32 x 160 mm shank. It is the version to specify where both quick tool changes and reduced noise are required on the same job.

Can the VK 117LS replace a CP 1170S?

Yes, that is the duty it is made for: the VK 117LS is technically equivalent to the Chicago Pneumatic CP 1170S. A 57 mm piston on a 165 mm stroke gives 1,200 blows a minute at 41 kg on 35 l/s of air at 6 bar. It takes the same 32 x 160 mm shank, so moil points, chisels and asphalt cutters already on site will fit.

Which Vikay paving breaker do I need?

This page is the VK 117LS at 41 kg, at the heavy end of the range. Vikay manufactures breakers from 13.5 kg to 42 kg and the weight is the job: 13.5 kg for light construction and plant maintenance, 20 to 30 kg for general breaking, asphalt and pavement, 36 kg and above for reinforced concrete, frozen ground and thick pavement. The lightest machine that will do the work is usually the right one, because a heavier breaker breaks faster but tires the operator sooner. Silenced versions are manufactured alongside most models where noise is regulated.

Will my compressor run the VK 117LS?

The VK 117LS needs 35 l/s at 6 bar (74 cfm at 87 psi), delivered continuously. The inlet is 19 mm, so run at least that hose bore: anything narrower throttles the machine before the compressor does. At 1,200 blows a minute the draw is constant rather than intermittent, so allow headroom for hose length and for worn couplings.

Will my existing moil points, chisels and asphalt cutters fit the VK 117LS?

The VK 117LS takes a 32 x 160 mm shank (1¼" x 6¼"), with 28 x 160 mm available as an option, so any moil point cut to that shank fits, whatever machine it came off. Measure the shank on your existing tools rather than going by the model number.
